The book is a phenomenal purchase for those non-Hebrew speakers wishing to hike the trail. The maps are fairly well marked, the narrative that he tells when he has hiked the trail allows the reader to get an insight into what to expect; however, the English version does not really compare to the Hebrew version. I hiked with a friend using the Hebrew copy and noticed a significant amount of information missing from the English copy. First, do not hike the Jerusalem trail with the English copy, the map is not sufficient, and it is very likely that you will get lost. Second, although it is a great help that the topographical maps are in English, the quality is sacrificed and it becomes exceedingly difficult to use them. There is another version of the book in Hebrew with only the maps, which is cheaper and lighter. I highly recommend this book if you are sufficient in hiking to guide yourself. Other than these few problems, it is a required buy for those wishing to thru-hike. I would recommend looking at the real topographical maps though as well.

PS. It is not mentioned, but Israel is starting to place water faucets along the trail. They only have a few up and running, but it is important to look into.

Hike the land of Israel Jacob Saar 9789659124909 Books Reviews

I really found the map useful, with clear directions and photos.
Also a lovely travel book to read along the way
I hesitated to pay what is a high amount for a hiking guide, but when I received the book and started reading, I quickly found information that would save me far more than the cost of the book. This is a good investment, as I prepare for an early 2012 hike on the INT. In particular, the south to north section from Eilat to Tel Aviv gives me details of what to expect, how to prepare, resources along the way, and special considerations for desert hiking. Although I have experience hiking in the Sinai, the Negev is not the same, and Saar is very clear on the conditions to expect. What is also useful is the online updates to the book, showing changes in the route, plus amenities which are new or which have disappeared [...]. Hopefully I will be able to do an itemized critique of the book in mid-2012, but for now I am greatly satisfied and happy to have made this purchase. My only reason for not giving five stars is that the northern section of the trail is only given in a north to south format.
Short version Given the price, I expected a guidebook that would do the following help me follow the trail when the blazes are insufficent, let me know about sights along the way to decide what to see, and help me plan how much food and water to carry, as well as where to camp. This thing fails on all counts.

The major complaints are as follows

The verbal directions which make up most of the text are, 95% of the time, either redundant (when the trail is well marked, as it generally is) or entirely useless - it doesn't mention sections where the trail is badly marked, such as between Tzur Hadassah and En Kerem, or along the coast, and rarely offers any guidance for these parts other than telling you to follow a certain colored blaze - as if you'd be looking in the book if there were blazes to follow!

The information on where to get water and food in the north is sporadic at best. It rarely mentions which towns have supermarkets, making it difficult to know how to plan when you'll be able to restock food. You're often left guessing as to which little kibbutz will have a store. Same with water - there are often water taps and fountains available on the trail, but he doesn't mention these. This means you often end up carrying a full day's worth of water (five liters - which has a major impact on how enjoyable the hike is!) when you could have carried only two. This laziness also applies to camp sites - sometimes he'll recommend one, other times he won't. On the times when he doesn't, you just have to hope camping is allowed and safe in the area. I am pretty sure that on his hike, he often stayed in b&b's, and on those nights he doesn't bother telling you where good spots to camp are.

The book sometimes gives a brief blurb describing sights and national parks along the trail, which is helpful when deciding whether some attraction is worth a detour. Other times he just mentions the places in passing, giving no useful information. You get the feeling this is also based on what he happened to see, and what he happens to remember (I doubt any real research was done for the book, even though all that would have been required in most cases would be some quick Googling). In one case, the trail passes several ruins in a day's hike. He describes one, then by the last one says "I think I've had enough ruins for today" or something to that effect. If you're into archaeology, good luck using this guidebook to decide which sites you should detour to check out! The same is true of most other sights.

As far as I can tell, the author hiked the trail once for pleasure (which, I realized, is very different than hiking it with writing a book in mind) and then wrote this without doing any research other than throwing in factoids he remembered. There's little attempt to create a professional product, in the presentation as well as in the quality of the content.

Basically, it's heinously overpriced but no matter the cost, it's not worth the money. Unfortunately there's no other option in English so many hikers are probably stuck with it; but do your best to get a used copy from someone for free. It's still cheaper than buying all 15 topographical maps you'd need for the trail, but if you're like me, you'll resent blowing so much cash on such a poor quality product.
That's all You need to hike in Israel!
